Why isn't my business in the Map Pack?

The answer A business misses the Google Map Pack for a stack of diagnosable reasons: wrong or incomplete profile categories, inconsistent name-address-phone data, thin behavioral signals, a review gap against incumbents, proximity physics, spam-filter suppression, or a website Google cannot connect to the profile. Across 847 campaign audits, most businesses fail on three or more of these at once, and all seven are fixable or routable.

The seven reasons, ranked by how often we find them

1. Your categories are wrong or incomplete

The primary category is the single strongest relevance lever on a Google Business Profile, and secondary categories widen the queries you can appear for. The most common finding in our audits is a business competing against rivals that carry five relevant categories while it carries two. Google cannot rank you for a service it does not know you offer.

2. Your NAP data contradicts itself

Name, address, and phone must be identical across your profile, website, and the directories Google trusts. Contradictions cap your prominence quietly: Google sees two half-strength versions of you instead of one strong one. This compounds over years of moves, rebrands, and old listings nobody cleaned up.

3. Your behavioral signals are thin

The tiebreaker. Google watches who gets searched by name, whose profile gets opened, who gets called, who gets direction requests, and whose website holds attention. Behavioral signals are the fastest-growing local ranking factor group (Source: Whitespark, 2026). If your competitors generate that behavior and you do not, they win the close races even with equal profiles.

4. Your review profile trails the incumbents

Not just count: velocity and substance. A dozen context-rich reviews that mention specific services outperform fifty generic five-star ratings, because AI systems and the local algorithm both parse review content for relevance (Source: industry review-signal research, 2026). If the pack incumbents add ten reviews a month and you add one, the gap widens while you wait.

5. Proximity physics are against you

The pack weights distance to the searcher. If your address sits in an industrial park while customers search from neighborhoods fifteen minutes away, or if you are a service-area business with no storefront at all, you are fighting geometry. Storefront businesses can offset distance with signal and prominence. SABs should route around it entirely: AI answers have no proximity bias, which is why AEO is the SAB lane.

6. A spam filter is suppressing you

Google's March and June 2026 spam updates aggressively target keyword-stuffed business names, fake addresses, and artificial engagement patterns, and enforcement is retroactive. If your listing (or your SEO vendor's past tactics) tripped a filter, you can be invisible while everything else looks fine. Diagnosis requires comparing your visibility pattern against your fundamentals.

7. Google can't connect your website to your profile

The profile and the website corroborate each other. A site with no structured data, mismatched business details, or thin service content gives Google nothing to verify against, and since the December 2025 core update, weak sites drag profiles down with them.

3+of these seven failures appear together in the typical audit. They compound: wrong categories waste good reviews, NAP conflicts waste behavioral signal (Source: SEO Local audit data, 847 campaigns).
